Volcanic - Miocene Ignimbrite Flare-up

Miocene-age silicic ignimbrites, tuffs, ash, and related pyroclastic sediments known as the Padre Miguel Group in Honduras and Guatemala blanket about one-third of Honduras, practically all of the west and south.   The Miocene event of Central America is the second largest ignimbrite flare-up on the planet based on the record from marine drilling (e.g. ODP leg 165). Haraldur Sigurdsson and Steve Carey of the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island are leading a field effort to investigate the Central America ignimbrite event, with funding from the National Science Foundation.  In 2000 they covered the Nicaraguan ignimbrite province.  In January of 2001,  Haraldur Sigurdsson, Steve Carey and Ben Jordon ( Dept of Geology  The United Arab Emirates University) of GSO-URI along with Rob Rogers of The University of Texas at Austin (now at California State University Stanislaus), collected over 150 samples (including 54 volcanic glass samples) in the ignimbrite province of Honduras.
