Email and the World Wide Web provide incredibly powerful communication tools especially for countries like Honduras with developing geological research programs. Outside of a standard desktop computer, modem, and Internet access provider, the components of effective electronic communication are a few software applications, appropriate content and constant upkeep.
Required software for a web site can be word processing applications and a web browser with HTML editing capability. Software for HTML editing, posting web pages, and e-mail services are available over the internet for free for non-commercial purposes. Content should be well-organized and quick for the target audience to download with fast, text base content and small simple graphics. Content may include an index of geological maps, bibliographies, contact lists, and full geologic reports. Regular updates and constant marketing attract users and contributors. Visitation to the site is facilitated by answering e-mail and searching for links, updates and contributors. E-mail distribution is a low-cost method to make the scientific community aware of a site and ideally creates feedback as users on the distribution list submit new material and "links".

A guide and tools for developing effective geoscience web sites can be found at http://www.wolfenet.com/~krautara/tools.html on the Honduras Geology website.

This guide for web development is currently under construction and this link will be activated in a week. Rob Rogers, 7/19/98.
